Michael Watson

Michael Watson CA DFP BCOM

Managing Director

Michael founded Advali Accountants in 2014 with the ambition of building WA's top family-owned boutique Chartered Accounting practice. Shortly after incorporation, Michael strengthened Advali's leadership team with the addition of his father and brother.

The early success of Advali was attributed to Michael's foundations developed as a Chartered Accountant (CA) with over 15 years of experience working in both boutique and top tier accounting and advisory practices. He graduated from UWA with a major in investment finance, corporate finance, and financial accounting (BCom).

Michael holds a tax agent licence and is skilled in financial accounting and taxation at the individual, partnership, trust and corporate levels. His knowledge includes business structures, valuations, acquisitions and mergers, tax, financial accounting, management accounting and financial analysis.

Michael has worked in KPMG’s corporate finance team, providing restructuring advice to listed companies, and has experience as a financial adviser providing technical financial planning and investment advice. Previous roles included researching, recommending and implementing investment strategies and acquisitions for high net worth clients. During this time, he completed a Diploma in Financial Planning (DipFP) to expand his knowledge and credentials in financial advisory.

Kelly Ferguson BCOM PostGradDipEd

Practice Administrator & Co-Owner

Kelly is the Practice Administrator and co-owner of Advali. She completed a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) at Curtin University in 2013 and then went on to complete a Graduate Diploma of Education in 2016 at Edith Cowan University.

Kelly has been with Advali since it was founded in 2014 and is responsible for managing the practice. Her role within the company encompasses a broad spectrum of duties, including processing financials, tax returns and Business Activity Statements; entity establishment; managing social media and marketing; processing Research & Development applications; bookkeeping; payroll duties; office management; and client onboarding and correspondence.

Ilya Davydkin BCOM

Senior Accountant

Ilya joined Advali in 2020. He completed his degree in Finance & Marketing at Curtin University. Ilya’s primary role is to provide compliance, finance management and advisory services for clients.

Ilya is responsible for developing financial dashboards for clients in Google Data Studio to assist with business performance evaluation, analysis and forecasting.

He also prepares financial reports for clients in accordance with statutory requirements and the needs of clients, as well as Business Activity Statements and Instalment Activity Statements. He assists clients with GST, PAYGI and PAYGW and other indirect taxes; and with the preparation of financial data for submission to external bodies as required.

Mandy Tay ACCA BCOM (HONS)

Accountant

Mandy brings her ten years of experience as a Chartered Certified Accountant in commercial practice in the South East Asian market to the Advali team. She obtained a Bachelor of Accounting and Finance with honours from the University of Brunei Darussalam. Her career path has been diverse - encompassing roles in audit, bookkeeping, accounting software analysis and CRM testing. Her most recent role was as an Audit Senior at Deloitte & Touche. During this time, she was a part of Singapore Deloitte's Consulting, where she aided in an Indonesian/Canadian merger and acquisition and assisted with the SAP Finance implementation for a large oil and gas company.

Mandy brings the skills she has developed through her background in auditing and IT to her current role with Advali. Her role currently includes the preparation of tax returns and financial reports, as well as Business Activity Statements.

Julian Maghiar

Accountant

Julian, our junior accountant, started his journey at Advali as an intern in early 2023 while studying at Murdoch University to earn his Bachelor's in Business. After graduating from Corpus Christi College in 2020, Julian has been actively pursuing his passion for accounting and is eager to complete his Chartered Accountants after the completion of his degree. 

Julian predominantly assists with the preparation of Business Activity Statements, Instalment Activity Statements and other tax related tasks whilst overseeing the lodgement status of tax returns throughout the financial year.

Samuel Watson CA GDAF BCOM (HONS)

Business Advisor

Sam is a Chartered Accountant with some 10 years experience working in both public practice and commercial practices. He graduated from The University of Western Australia in 2010 with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Financial Accounting, Corporate Finance and Marketing, and Honours in Financial Accounting and Marketing. Sam has also furthered his studies and completed a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance.

He began his career at PwC as an auditor with exposure to both listed and private companies before moving into the Private Clients Business Improvement division where his focus was on helping businesses: understand the key drivers of financial performance; develop strategic plans; and identify process improvements.

Sam then moved into various commercial roles working as a financial analyst in the aged care and education sectors. His focus was on financial modelling, data analysis and business improvement. His focus now is on providing advice to business owners to help them understand the relationship between key financial performance metrics and changes in the value of their business.

John Watson FCA PHD MCOM

Chairman

After completing his Bachelor of Commerce Degree at UWA (with honours), John began his working career at Price Waterhouse and Co where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant. He then returned to The University of Western Australia in 1976 as a tutor while completing a Master of Commerce Degree (in Finance). John continued working for UWA for some 40 years during which time he was Head of Department for three years and completed his PhD in 1995. John was also involved in setting up the Institute of Chartered Accountants Professional Development week which, in the early years, was held at UWA; and in recognition for his efforts he was made a Fellow of the Institute.

John’s primary research interests are in accounting, finance and entrepreneurship (in particular, evaluating SME performance). John has published numerous articles in leading international journals and his research has been cited in over 6,500 publications. John is now helping business owners better understand the key concepts associated with analysing their business’s performance and the importance of strategy development.
